Giardiasis Model

Our model simulates the infectious disease giardiasis, which is based off giardia parasites that are ingested by hosts and can cause lots of damage to your intestine and other internal systems. Many of the human impacts include dehydration, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach/abdominal pain. We hope that by modeling this disease, we can identify potential solutions through testing of certain variables.

As the model runs, the white agents represent healthy hosts, the pink agents represent the giardia parasites, and the green stationary agents represent hospitals. If a giardia parasite comes into contact with a healthy agent (a pink agent collides with a white agent), then there is a chance that the white agent will become infected, which is modeled by the white agent turning black. If an infected agent comes into contact with a hospital, then the infected agent has a chance of recovering and becoming healthy again. If a giardia parasite comes into contact with a hospital, then it is "sanitized", represented by it being deleted. The line graph will display the data of the number of healthy agents and infected agents at any given point in time while the model is running.
